• A Great Time Was Had By All

0 comments / Posted by Ann Wilt

Our 27th annual banquet was a glorious evening for the 178 guests who joined the celebration.  Held at the beautiful Legend at Merrill Hills, the spectacular venue was the perfect place to celebrate Knollwood’s memorable 2024 and to look forward to the new year.

2024 was an outstanding year for Knollwood. The farm coached riders and horses to 17 world and national titles, while riders learned countless lessons and became better horse people and more understanding humans in general.

Our lesson program continued to welcome new riders to the enjoyment of horses and of Saddlebreds in particular. Who can’t fall in love with lesson horses like Hooper, Leon, and newcomer Oscar?

Our riding school’s strong academy program continues to produce strong riders with a great understanding and respect of the horses they ride. You only need to walk through the school barn to hear and see that process in action.

We’re thankful for the friendships we’ve made, and are looking forward to 2025 as we hope to build our Knollwood community.

Here are some highlights of banquet evening:

Knockout treasurer and party planner extraordinaire Susan gave us her annual treasurer report, and gave the Knockouts a stellar financial rating. The club’s fundraising efforts at Knollwood show concessions, the ASAW Showcase, and the annual car wash feed the coffers that allow the club to donate to worthy causes and subsidize the annual banquet.

She also reminded us of how far we've come, with memories of the first ever banquet that hosted 65 guests at a small venue.

We awarded 69 champion and reserve champion awards in the academy division. We recognize riders who are starting out by showing at our home shows, and the riders on our academy team who enjoy showing away from home.

We also announced 24 riders who earned Academy Awards from the American Saddlebred Horse and Breeders Association by earning a minimum of 15 points during the 2024 season.

In addition, we awarded 4 riders with overall high point awards for both in-barn and out-of-barn competitions.

Congratulations to all who showed with us this season!

In a hotly contested battle, we were thrilled to announce Fred as the school horse of the year for 2024. Known around the farm as Mr. Rogers, Fred is a foundation of our lesson program.

This relaxed quarter horse isn’t bothered by anything. He enjoys sharing the arena with show horses, although he wants to know why they feel the need to go so fast.

He trots a mean circle and serpentines for the smallest of riders, and has been known to let his enthusiasm get the best of him when playing games with the advanced riders. Whan you hear riders laughing and saying ‘Whoop Fred,’ you know he’s decided to show his cantering skills. Of course, he never does this with little riders.

We celebrated with a Fred slideshow with the theme to ‘Mr Rogers’ as the soundtrack.

Fred is smart, and we’re  grateful he’s part of our faculty.

Scott took to the podium for his annual ‘State of the Farm’ address, and did not disappoint. He reviewed show barn successes, poked fun at some of the riders, and one of them answered him back.

Obviously proud of all that the Knollwood team has achieved, he praised Lin’s work, and the efforts of the lesson program which continues to send well prepared riders to the show barn and the horse show world.

The slide show was a fun visual review of the year, capturing all the success and some of the funny moments of the year.

The dance floor opened, and the party continued until it was time to  go.

Richmond’s doppelganger was washed and dried prior to his return to Merrill Hills. He enjoyed a busy night on the dance floor.

Our youngest riders gathered together and played horse show, hide and seek, and met some of their show barn heroes.

Many attendees were probably sore on Sunday from laughing so hard with Knollwood friends.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the event, attended the event, and who made it a memorable year. Team Knollwood continues to be a vibrant community, and we have plans in  to make it even better in 2025.

Great thanks to Wee Irish photography for covering our banquet. Kim and her team provided breathraking coverage. WIth the exception of Fred's photo which is by Hanna Agathen Photography, all other banquet shots are Kim's work.

Here's a link to her gallery of the evening.

  • The Best Night of the Year

0 comments / Posted by Ann Wilt

It’s the night we’ve been waiting for.

The storied Knollwood banquet is coming up this Saturday and we can hardly wait.  We are expecting a record number of guests, many of whom are attending for the first time.

Here are some helpful tips to enjoy the festivities like a seasoned attendee.

Country Club dress code is in effect. This means that no denim of any kind is allowed, and that men must wear shirts with collars, and all shirts must be tucked in. Please help us celebrate in style.

We're pleased to welcome Wee Irish Photography as our official event photographer. Kim and Karina will be capturing memories at the banquet.

    Timing

We start the party with 45 minutes of social time starting at 6:30. It’s the perfect time to catch up with friends and introduce yourself to some new ones.

It’s also a good time to find seats, as well. Seats are not reserved, so you can sit wherever you’d like. Knollwood Kids can choose to sit with their families, or at a table of other young riders.

A tasty buffet dinner will start at 7:15 with different stations to choose from.

Towards the end of dining time, our 2024 Knollwood officers and board members will greet the crowd and recap the year that was. They’ll introduce our new officers and board members for 2025 who will lay out their plans for the upcoming year.

The group of officers and board members will then introduce the winner of the Horse of the Year Election. The winner will even have his own slide show!

Will it be Earl, Fred, Pony Frank, or Thomas?  You’ll have to wait until Saturday to find out!

After the results are announced, everyone will receive a memento of the election winner.

The awards portion of the banquet comes after the big reveal. We give out A LOT of awards.

There are winners for in-barn Knollwood shows, out-of-barn academy shows, and Academy Awards from the American Saddlebred Horse and Breeders Association. We finish the awards presentation by revealing the grand high point champions and reserve champions for both in barn and out of barn divisions.

We finish the presentations with Scott’s ‘State of the Farm’ address and a slide show recapping 2024. Always entertaining, Scott will try to recap the show barn’s amazing year, and look forward to 2025.

Following these, the dance floor will be open, and desserts will be served just inside the bar. And yes, the bar remains open all through the banquet. Kiddie cocktails are best sellers at this party!

To make it a great event for all, please remember to

       Welcome new riders and families

      Clap for everyone.

Get to know some new riders on the dance floor.

It’s a great chance to meet your riding heroes. National and World champion riders will be attendance, and would love to meet you!

  • Our Plan for Progress In The Offseason.

0 comments / Posted by Ann Wilt

Riding success is hard. Really hard.

It takes hours, days, and weeks of hard work and dedication to make progress.

Here are our seven ideas to help Knollwood Kids of all ages to become better riders over the winter.

Come to Your Lesson Physically Prepared.

Proper Attire is a big part of your progress.

Make sure your jods fit well and have working tie downs.

Make sure your shirt is form-fitting, and tucks in.  Loose, bulky shirts obscure your upper body position.

Gloves are a must so you can feel the reins well.

Your helmet must be well-fitted to not be a distraction. Please ask your instructor if you need help.

Be sure to bring a coat to the arena in the winter, especially with chute construction going on.

Come to Your Lesson Mentally Prepared

Get ready to focus on riding by taking a few minutes to clear your head of school or work that day.

Try to remember what skills you worked on in your previous lesson.

Focus on your ride, not on anything else in the arena.

Bring a positive mindset to the arena so you’re ready to learn!

Ride As Much As You Can!

    Any horse.

    Any time.

Don’t skip helper rides!  Bareback and saddle-no-stirrup rides will be the making of extra strength.

Use helper rides to practice new skills from your lessons. Repetition of skills is the key.

Spend Time In Your Horse’s Stall

Learn how he reacts to brushing.

See how he reacts to your voice.

Learn where his favorite spots are for brushing.

    Watch him while you’re tacking.

Make sure his tack and blankets are comfortable, and ask an instructor any questions.

Thank him before and after your ride.

    Helping Others Helps Your Progress

Explain simple skills to beginners. It helps you clarify how YOU do it.

When you help a beginner with a halter or a bridle, it solidifies the process in YOUR mind.

When you adjust a stirrups for a new rider, it makes YOU ponder the importance of it.

When you teach a new Knollwood Kid how a horse thinks in a situation, it brings horse psychology to the front of your mind.

    Ditch the Phone

The barns and arenas at Knollwood are full of knowledge.

Instructors and barn managers know so many things. Ask questions and you’ll learn a lot.

Watch lessons in the arena. Knollwood has produced many, many  national and world champion riders. Count yourself fortunate that you can absorb some of the best instruction there is.

Watch Scott, Carol, and Lin work horses. You’ll see artists at work, and you’ll learn so much about how horses' minds work. You’ll see great patience, some tough love, and lots of positive reinforcement.

You’ll see young horses learning their first lessons, and you’ll see seasoned show horses looking better every day.

You can’t learn any of this from a phone.

  • Our Recipe For A Remarkable 2025

0 comments / Posted by Ann Wilt

Let’s say it one more time, 2024 was a memorable one for team Knollwood.

Our show barn team was successful at shows all over the country, winning and learning along the way.  Our rough count is that the equitation riders won a total of 17 world and national titles and shone in the performance arena as well.

Our academy program grew by leaps and bounds as we introduced 14 new riders to the joys of academy showing. Our summer camps were sold out, and our introductory programs kept the momentum coming as we welcomed new riders to the horse world.

How do we continue success like this?

    We have some ideas.

    Be Welcoming.

When you see a new rider waiting to start a lesson, welcome them to Knollwood.

If you see someone taking an introductory tour, welcome them to the horse world.

If you’re in the lounge and see a new rider in the arena, talk to their parents about Knollwood.

    Be Encouraging.

Tell a beginner rider that they are doing well.

Tell a new helper that they’re doing a good job.

Tell someone who’s struggling that you went through the same phase. We all do.

Tell someone that you also had a tough time ‘getting’ a particular horse.

    Congratulate.

Congratulate a rider on their performance at a Knollwood show.

Meet a friend at the out gate to congratulate them on a strong ride.

Congratulate a Knollwood Kid on riding a new horse.

Congratulate a helper on a job well done with a new rider.

Do Everything to the best of your ability

We all know that horses are not glamorous, and tasks that go with them are also not.

So, do each task the best your can so you can be proud of the job you’ve done.

Roll the hose up perfectly with no twists.

Empty muck buckets with no spillage.

Sweep the lounge so it’s spotless.

    Clean tack until it shines.

Brush horses so well that they’re show ring ready.

Pick up the small arena so it’s ready for camp the next day.

Don’t stop your task until you’re proud.

    Put Everything Back

Put your saddle away with its cover on.

Put your bridle away to it’s ready for the next lesson.

Make sure your brushing bag is away.

Use a ladder? Put it back where you found it.

Coolers and bareback pads should be back in their cubbies.

    Ask Questions

    Ask an instructor.

    Ask the barn manager.

    Ask a camp counselor.

Show barn? Ask Lin or Carol or Scott.

    Ditch The Phone

    Alternatives to watching your phone?

Brush a retiree horse. They’ll love you for it.

Listen to lessons. You’ll be amazed at what you’ll learn.

Watch show horse work sessions. You'll see masters at work.

Ask Scott a question. Few people on this earth know as much about Saddlebreds as he does.

    Sweep.

Ask an Admin or Barn manager what you can do to help.

    Breaking News:

    Welcome Bridget!

We're thrilled to welcome Bridget Ward to our academy faculty.

A graduate of William Woods University, Bridget is well known in the saddlebred industry for turning out accomplished riders, most recently at Equitate LLC in Oconomowoc.

We welcome her skills and enthusiasm as we continue to grow our academy showing program. She'll be teaching academy riders on Monday afternoons.

Meet Oscar, Our New Academy Horse!

Please welcome our new academy horse, Oscar. Officially known in the saddlebred registry as Oscar Nominee, he came to us from Iowa, where he's been a successful show horse in the western division.

He's beautiful on the inside and the outside, and will really help us with all of our academy stars!!

    What’s Coming Up?

  • Looking Back, and Looking Ahead

0 comments / Posted by Ann Wilt

We’ve had an unbelievable year at Knollwood.

Both the show barn and the school barn enjoyed a year of great growth, success, and adventures. Oh, the adventures we've had...

Let’s look back on some stories of 2024, and look forward to adventures that await us in 2025.

    Knollwood Shows

We hosted 3 day academy shows in May, August in October, and they were all blockbusters. We’re happy to say that the weather cooperated this year, even with the fall show!

The starting place for all of our riders, our in-barn shows offer friendly competition in a controlled situation.  Our advanced and show barn riders are a big part of these weekends. Acting as personal assistants to our priceless school horses, they support the competitors and give them lots of confidence. We couldn’t do it without them.

The smiles on the riders faces say it all.

    The Knollwood Knockouts

The Knockouts are primarily a service organization, and they outdid themselves this year.

The club set food donation records with their annual drive to support the Food Pantry of Waukesha County.  Members enjoyed an Olympic celebration after the drive which was most entertaining.

Members washed cars and sold brats in June at the Piggly Wiggly in Hartland. Possibly the most enjoyable fund-raising event of the year, these kids washed lots of cars, got really wet doing it, and had a ball.

The Knockouts took to the streets around the farm twice this year to beautify the neighborhood. Their street cleanup days make Oakwood and Nagawicka Roads a lot more scenic.

The club also made charitable donations to hurricane relief in North Carolina, to 2 trainers in need, and to the US Saddleseat World Cup Team.

    March Clinic

Hall of Fame trainer and instructor Lynda Freseth came to Knollwood in March for a preseason clinic. Lynda worked with show barn riders as well as some advanced academy students both in the arena and in a social setting.

She commented on how nice our lesson horses are, and how accomplished the academy riders were.

It was a priceless opportunity to learn from a legend in the Saddlebred world.

    Academy Kick Off

This year, we enjoyed an academy kickoff night where the new show riders and their families came and got to know each other.

Scott showed everyone how to tie his favorite small tie knot, Hanna showed visitors how to make the perfect show bun, and Karina demo-ed make up for all ages of show riders.

We had a ball getting ready for the academy season!

    Knollwood Summer Camps 2024

What a summer we had at Knollwood.

Between camps for Tiny Tots, new riders, enrolled riders, riders prepping for the Knollwood summer show, riders prepping for the Summer Showcase, and academy rider camps, we had a ton of adventures.

Our lesson horses were spectacular as usual, and they taught many new riders about riding and so much more. Campers learned grooming, tacking and safety while they learned responsibility and respect for horses.

    Some highlights of the summer?

Bee realized that working slowly isn’t a bad thing.

Earl makes a perfect canvas for finger paint.

Pattern camp kids went ‘fishing’ in the pasture after some crazy rains.

Richie’s World Cup trip to South Africa

Knollwood Kid Richie traveled to Parys, South Africa with Team USA to compete in the Saddle Seat World Cup. As part of the three gaited team, Richie’s team competed against Canada and South Africa.

Team USA won the gold medal in the three gaited competition while South Africa won the 5 gaited event.

The South Africans were great hosts, making sure that team members and their families got to see the sights during their non-riding times.

The Dallen family stayed on for another week to adventure after the competition.

We couldn’t be more proud of the accomplishments of these riders and horses. Most of the riders started out in our academy program and grew up Knollwood Kids.

    What’s in store for 2025?

The lesson program is still growing, and we welcomed a new academy horse named Oscar to the farm this week. We’re looking forward to getting to know him.

We’ll need his help with all of the up-and-coming academy stars this year!

The Knockouts have installed new officers for 2025, as Adrienne and Thea will he heading off to college in the fall.

The show barn has some exciting things in store

After a highly successful first year showing out of the academy division, Leighton will be hitting the 13 and under equitation division next season with Teddy, formerly owned by Shaye. This grand gelding teamed with Shaye for many wins, and we can hardly wait to see Leighton and Teddy take on new challenges.

The Jensen family has purchased No Rest For the Wicked for Shaye to show next season. Known as Lady, this beautiful mare is quickly catching on to the ways of on equitation horse. She and Shaye will have a blast together next season.

We’ll have some exciting new lease information coming soon, too!
