Helper Olympics III are coming up this Saturday, May 18 at 6 PM.

Here are the food kit standings as of Tuesday night:

• Team Sunday          No food kits

• Team Thursday     10 Food Kits
• Team Friday            4 Food Kits
• Team Saturday       1 Food Kit

Remember that each team must have 10 food kits to compete on Saturday, so let’s get going so we can beat last year’s contribution to the Waukesha County Food Pantry.

Well, they’re not.  We have lots of fun events coming up, and you won’t want to miss a thing!

Be sure to join us this Saturday at 6 PM for Helper Olympics 3!  Teams of helpers have been practicing their dances, their running skills, and their jumping strategies for the competition.  They’ll compete in games of helper ‘skills’ while we count the food donations they’ve been collecting for the past month.

We hope you’ve already donated, but if you haven’t, there’s still time!  Bring a food kit donation to the show barn lounge to help support the Waukesha County Food Pantry, the Knockout’s beneficiary for the event.  You can also make a donation by cash or check!  Any of the wonderful helpers would be glad to help!

The following week, the show horses are headed to the state capitol for the Madison Classic Horse Show which runs from Thursday thru Sunday.  This is a great chance to see some beautiful saddlebreds in competition close to home.

Please come join us and cheer on Team Knollwood.  The Alliant Energy Center is also hosting the World’s Largest Brat Festival, so the grounds will be rocking with lots of activity!

The academy show season contunues the following weekend in Roscoe, Illinois at the Prairie State Classic. Six academy horses will compete with 12 riders against riders from other lesson programs.

If this sounds like fun to you, please contact your instructor to join the fun.  We have a show in Cedarburg in August that offers maiden classes for first time show riders, and we’l love to take some new competitors!

The summer show hosts the Knockouts’ Time and Talent Auction, so start planning what talent you can enter in the auction to help the club raise funds for their charitable activities!

Summer 2012

Summer riding school starts on June 10 and continues for nine weeks this summer. We’re offering a special “Show Prep’ week from June 17-21 for riders currently enrolled in our program to get extra saddle time before the summer show.  These riders will also learn about show horses and preparation for the show ring.  This week is filling fast, so please talk to your instructor to save your spot!

We have lots of fun planned at Knollwood for the start of summer, and we hope you’ll join us as we enjoy friends, both 2 and 4 legged!

Thanks so much for all the questions about the school horses!  You’ve given me a lot of them, and I’ll do my best to keep up.

Why is Sundance answering all the questions?

I am the master of the pasture! 

I have worked my way up through the ranks of horses in the pasture.  I picture myself as a benevolent dictator, keeping my employees in line and in their place.  Because the boys work for me, I am the official spokesperson for what I think is the best bunch of lesson horses ever.

Why does Picasso not like other horses?

Well, it’s not that Picasso doesn’t like other horses, he just might be having a disagreement with one of them, or he may be having an off day.  We lesson horses pride ourselves at teaching riders how to adjust the attitude of their equine friends.  In some cases, horses will work in blinkers to help them focus on what’s ahead of them instead of what’s going on around them.

Why does Forest sleep a lot?

Well, Forest loves to eat, and while most of us are sleeping in the pasture at night, he’s still eating. It also takes a lot of energy to carry around all of Forest, so he naps to conserve his energy.  Have you ever tried staying up all night eating and working on your iPad?

How could this NOT be my favorite dog?

Who is your favorite dog, and why?

 This is really a hard question, because I like all of them.  Skeet is hilarious, Diva is an adorable clutz, Ellie is the perfect puppy sitter for Diva, and Champ is such a calming influence on everyone around here. 

I think I would have to say that Skeet is my favorite, because he’s a media sensation like myself.  Actually, he’s one step ahead of me because he has his own Facebook page. If I could just pry that iPad out of Forest’s clutches…

Most definitely purple.  Doesn’t he look dashing in his violet halter?

I believe he’s the most fashion forward of all my employees, and carries himself with a little extra attitude. If there was a reality modeling show for horses, he would be the star, don’t you think?

I love my job!

Why are your eyes changing, and do you see things differently?

  I’ve heard some people say that ‘getting old isn’t for sissies,’ and I have to agree with them.  I’m 23 years old now, and my eyes aren’t quite what they used to be.  I’ve lost come clarity, so some things can be confusing to me.  I love teaching confident riders who help me stay straight and help me focus my thinking on them instead of shadows. Thanks for being so understanding and patient as I adjust to age!

Do you like to trot or canter better?

 Actually, I prefer trotting.  With the way I’m put together, I find it a lot easier than having to push so hard with my back legs AND keep my head up to canter.  I enjoy teaching riders who have become comfortable on some of my employees who find it easier to canter than trot.  My work begins as I teach them how to keep my head up, drive with my back legs, and listen for my not so subtle clues that I’m going to downshift to a trot.

If you were a human, what would you pick as a pet?

A saddlebred horse, of course.  

We’re beautiful, are tremendous athletes who can do almost anything, are loyal, and love people.

Who is your favorite horse in the stable?  Mine is Bo.

 Well, lots of the helpers really seem to like Bo.  I think they like his ‘go forward’ attitude and his beautiful color.

I myself cannot name a favorite among my lesson horses.  I actually like all of them because they each have a lesson to teach. This brings me to the most interesting question of the week:

Why do I have to ride horses that I really don’t like?

As lesson horses, we work with the instructors to teach riders the art of horsemanship.  

This means that the rider must understand how horses perceive the world and everything and everyone in it.

Some of the beginner lesson horses have become so used to the routine, that they hardly even act like horses anymore.  This quality is useful when teaching brand new beginners to get the rhythm of the walk and trot, and to start learning steering. This select group can be trusted with the smallest and most timid of riders.

These special horses also teach the rider to be persistent with their directions to get what they want.  You’ll notice that riders have to repeat instructions to get the horse to trot or increase their speed.  This is actually by design!  The horses are giving the inexperienced riders time to adjust their balance before speed is. increased, and are teaching follow through.  If these horses stepped off to a trot the first time the rookie riders asked, riders would be falling off at a great rate.  We horses really HATE it when someone falls off!!

NO ONE teaches a rider to sit deep and strong better than Shamrock!

As riders progress, they are able to learn from a large group of lesson horses that the instructors refer to as ‘the library.’  There is a horse ready and able to teach whatever skill the rider is working on.  Is it bridle work?  I may be your man.  Is it time to learn to use your ‘go forward’ commands before the bridle?  Tony excels at that!  Is it learning to sit down and slow your horse from the bottom of the saddle?  Shamrock is a pro at that!

I could go on and on, but the 20 some Knollwood lesson horses can teach you anything you want to know about saddle seat riding.  While riders sometimes are frustrated by a particular horse, they usually find that the lessons learned from that one school horse  make them better riders on all horses.  Often times,  these horses become favorites once new skills have been learned.

Scott, Carol, and Eric are at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St Paul putting the finishing touches on 20 horses for the FASH show starting tomorrow.  This is the biggest show so far this year for Team Knollwood, and there will be lots of stories to tell and results to be shared.

To the best of our knowledge, the show in NOT being webcast, but we have the perfect solution to keep all of us updated.  Alex has agreed to be our show correspondent for all the shows she and Batman are traveling to.  You can watch for her updates on the Knollwood Facebook page.

Thanks so much for the great questions about the school horses, and about me in particular.  Your queries ranged from silly to profound, and I’ll do my best to illuminate you! Carol is out enjoying this beautiful spring day, so I was able to sneak in to her office!

Who is your favorite cat, and why?

I like Dean, although I have a lot of questions about him!

Actually, I don’t have too much interaction with the cats.  I’m so busy keeping my school horses in line, and resolving interpersonal spats in the pasture, that I don’t talk to them too much.  I WILL say that Dean seems really interested in us, and spends a lot of time sitting on the posts at the back of our stalls.  

Do any of you know why he runs up and down the aisle?  

Do you know why he rides in the hay cart when the helpers deliver salad to the outside horses?  

Who is your favorite helper and why?

How can you name a favorite? They work so hard, they fell asleep in the aisle!

First of all, let me say that I and all of my employees love the helpers!

They take good care of us with grooming sessions that feel great, and they deliver our meals.   They give us baths in the summer, and make sure we’re snug in our blankets in the winter.  They are a big part of the reason that we feel like the luckiest horses in the world working at Knollwood.

I couldn’t pick a favorite helper, but I will say that I appreciate the ones who respect my dietary choices and bring me vegetables for snacks instead of sugary mints.

Who is your favorite horse, and why?

I love all of my employees although I’ll say that some of them test my patience with their antics in the pasture.

 Could you PLEASE tell Fred that the round bales  are  for everyone to enjoy, and are NOT nap areas???

And could you tell Hugo that he’d have more energy for lessons if he spent less time on his hind legs in the pasture, playing with Dudley?

Back to the question… I have to give a shout out to Skipper.  He’s retired now, but he spent a lot of years as my lieutenant in the herd.  I always knew the pasture was in good hands when I traveled to shows and was away for a few days.  Now that he’s enjoying a life of leisure, I’m auditioning new assistants.  Right now, Tony and Hugo are the leading candidates.  I’ll get back to you on how it turns out!

Why was the silver horse ‘acting up’ during the Saturday 4:30 lesson for Heather last week?

Actually, he wasn’t really ‘acting up,’ he was just learning.  

His name is Bradley, and he came to us from a lesson program in Illinois where he was a walk and trot only lesson horse.  Our advanced riders are in the process of teaching him how to canter.  He’s catching on pretty quickly, but learning isn’t always pretty to the inexperienced eye.  In my professional opinion, Bradley’s catching on really well, and with the help of our instructors, he’s teaching our advanced riders some really good skills, too! 

I remember when I came to Knollwood 21 years ago as a walk and trot only whippersnapper.  Those riders did a pretty good job of teaching me to canter, don’t you think?

What do you like best about Ann the instructor?

I’ve taught ‘Bubbles’ a lot about patterns!

First of all, let me say that I LOVE all the instructors!  They look out for us, making sure that we teach riders who are ready to learn from each of us.  They treat us as the individuals we are! 

Hhmm… Ann… I think I like how she admires my versatility.  I can teach patterns like no one else, and give rookies lots of confidence.  Then, when a more advanced rider works on patterns, I like to throw some creativity into the lesson.  While I tell the rider that I can’t stop straight, or that the arena doors are new, I always through my glance to Ann, and she appreciates my teaching ability!

Do you have a girlfriend?

No, I do not.  Who has time for girls?

I am surrounded by the most wonderful group of geldings who are incredibly happy with their jobs.  

This question actually leads into the most popular question so far, 

Why are all the lesson horses geldings?

This is a great question! 

First of all, imagine this… Sixteen boys out in the pasture, and one mare comes in.  ( I know it starts like the start of a joke, right?)

Many of us would be VERY interested in the mare, and would likely fight over the chance to be near her.  We’d have fights outside, and these disagreements would probably carry over into the arena during lessons.

Imagine a group lesson with Dudley cutting  through the middle of the arena with an advanced beginner rider just trying to be near the mare!  And then, Tony might get upset that Dudley is near his ‘girlfriend,’ and he would come over to get her back.  

It sounds like a mess, doesn’t it?  How could I keep order in a situation like that?

The other good thing about a happy group of geldings is that we’re the same everyday!  We aren’t moody at different times of the month, we’re just happy to be here with our friends.  You can always count on our personalities being predictable.

I’m discussing my answer with Forest, who is actually a really good writer, like myself.

I’m contemplating my answer, but I can’t get to the computer until Carol leaves for the show in DesMoines on Thursday morning. 

I think I’m going to have a lot of lessons this weekend, because my academy show employees are going to Roscoe for the UPHA Chapter 10 Spring show.

I might not have the perfect answer until next week, but please keep your questions coming!

Helper Olympics III are coming!

Now in its third edition, this is one of the club’s largest service projects of the year. The Knockouts gather to help the Waukesha County Food Pantry at a time of the year when they’re low on donations.  In 2012,  the group donated 334 food kits, which translated to 1039 pounds of food,  and more than $1600.

Team Thursday, the Blue Bombing Bubble Bursters

Helpers from each day of the week have formed teams, and will compete against each other in a contest to see which day of the week can collect the most food and donations for the Waukesha County Food Pantry.

Teams are awarded points for each food kit donated for their day of the week.  

A food kit consists of:

• a box of cereal
• instant  potatoes
• gravy
• can of vegetables
• box of jello
• can of soup
• boxed dessert

These items can be bagged, labeled for the day of the week you’d like to support, and placed the the food pantry barrels.

Your donation to the pantry secures you an invitation to the olympic events held on Saturday, May 18 at 6 PM.

Helpers will compete against each other in games of ‘skill’ such as the blanket race, the wheelbarrow obstacle course, synchronized dancing with cones, the cross farm garbage relay, and several others to be chosen from suggestions from the helper themselves.

Following the events, the participants and their families enjoy a cook out while the donations are tabulated.  The teams with the most food and money donated to the food pantry will receive prizes.

Skeet Here for the first time in the 2013 show season!

As you may know, the Knollwood academy and ‘B’ horses were in Gurnee last weekend for the first IASPHA show of the season.  I love going there for a couple of reasons.  It’s heated, so I don’t have to turn up the electric blanket, the barn and show rings are all under one roof for easy access wherever I need to go, and the hospitality is not to be believed!

I’d like to take you on an insider’s tour of  my weekend as a horse show dog extraordinaire!

Whee! I love Fields and Fences! They have playgrounds for horse show dogs!

So, Mother, Diva, and I left Knollwood around 8:00 on Friday morning.  I thought we were going to a show because the two-horse trailer was following the truck all the way.  (I secretly think it might be attached to the truck! )

I realized we were going to Gurnee when we stopped at a toll booth.  (It’s kind of like the bank drive through, but they don’t give you treats…) When I saw Great America out the window, I knew we were going to Fields and Fences, the sight of my first show jumping exploits!

I ran into the barn to check out the stall charts to find out who our neighbors would be for the weekend.  Soooo excited to see that we were stabled between Huntoons and Country Meadow Farms! Huntoons have lots of nice customers, and lots of velcro in their tack room.  Everyone at Country Meadow is lots of fun, and they don’t seem to mind me searching in their tackroom either!

After we got the Knollwood aisle set up, horses washed and worked, Mother went to dinner while Diva and I napped in the truck.  It was back to the show for a few classes, and then to our beds in the hotel.  Set up day is always hard, but it’s so much fun seeing old friends!

Saturday was a crazy day that started bright and early.  After cleaning out, feeding, and prepping horses, I pulled cart cleaning duty.  I hope Mary appreciated just how shiny her cart was before Hooper got it all full of arena footing!

After I took a short nap, I had to take over out-gate duties for a few classes, so the regular gate man could take a break.  Diva tried to help, but she’s still a little unsteady on those long legs, so I let her watch me at work.

In between performances, it’s always really busy, with putting horses up, and prepping others for the next performance.  With all this activity, it’s always a challenge keeping the trunks clean and organized.  I had some spare time before the academy classes started, so I straightened a few of the trunks out.

Laura was helping the academy riders with their hair and make up, and thought it would be really fun to get me ready for the ring.

After a Saturday evening performance, it was back to the hotel.  I highly recommend the pet friendly accommodations at the Comfort Inn.  Their fabulous pillows combined with Mother’s down throw made for a very good night of sleep!

Sunday was a dream for me! I checked off an item on my bucket list.

After the usual cleaning out,feeding, and horse prepping, I got to try out the announcer’s booth!  Diva and I both got to get a view from the glassed in booth!  I must admit that it was difficult for me to see the ringmaster’s hand signals from the chair, so I had to jump on to the table.  Sorry for the blurry pic…I was trying to get a good view of Neil!

I have to give a shout out to the crew who helped me keep the show going for Knollwood.  These three ladies helped Nancy, Ann, and Laura keep all nine horses comfortable and beautiful for the weekend. They washed a lot of tails and legs, and helped the riders in addition to showing horses themselves!

Kelly and I are discussing the fine points of the last championship class. Diane and Neil are impressed with my insightful comments!

After the Sunday morning performance, I was invited to center ring to discuss the final class of the morning with the judge, Kelly Freeman.  (She recognizes my knowledge and wisdom of the show horse world!)

 We talked about her placings of the last championship while show manager Diane and ringmaster Neil listened to my unique insights.

I must say that the Knollwood riders had a really good show!  The academy riders put on great performances, and I think they had almost as much fun as I did!

Gina made her debut in a suit, and turned in some wonderful rides on CH Callaway’s Don’t Panic.

As a fashion expert in the horse show world, I must say that her new suit looks really good, even if it isn’t hunting orange!

When the show was over, I supervised the packing of trunks, said goodbye to my friends from Huntoon Stables, and said I looked forward to seeing them in Roscoe in two weeks at the UPHA Chapter 10 Spring Show.

It’s a full time job being me!

Don’t forget that this is Street Clean Up Weekend at Knollwood!  It starts at 1:00 PM on Saturday, and is followed by a Knockout Meeting at 3:30 pm.

Unfortunately, due to my arena duties, I won’t be able to help with the clean up.  I AM planning on attending the Knockout meeting, though.  I’d be more than happy to discuss horse showing or show ring fashion with anyone who might benefit from my experience!

The academy and ‘B’ horses are leaving Friday morning for Gurnee, IL where they’ll participate in the first IASPHA show of the season.  Horses and riders will compete from Friday to Sunday in the first big show of 2013  for the academy team.  Please come to Fields and Fences to cheer us on!  It’s nearby, and we’d love to have you!

Join the Knockouts for their clean up!

The following Saturday, April 20, is the Knockouts’ semi annual road clean up!  Club members willl gather at 1:00 to clean up Oakwood and Nagawicka Roads.  This is a great way to earn your Knockout service hours for 2013 that will make you eligible to receive high point awards at the banquet next January!

Just a reminder that all participants must have a signed permission slip from the City of Delafield.  Blanks are available in the school barn lounge.

After the clean up, members will gather back at Knollwood at 3:30 for their April meeting.

The Knollwood horses will be showing in two states the following weekend!  The ‘A’ horses will be off to Des Moines for  Spring Fest, and the academy and ‘B’ horses will be off to Roscoe for the UPHA Chapter 10 Spring show.  Our academy riders will compete Saturday and Sunday, while our ‘B’ riders start on Friday night.

The academy horses will hit the road again the next weekend for the first ever all UPHA one day all academy show in Hampshire, IL.  We’ll be taking Dudley, Forest, and some of the other horses for some of our entry level academy riders to experience the fun of showing away from home.  The show features maiden classes for both first time riders, and those who have never cantered at an away show as well.

 We’d love to have a cheering section here, too!

Our spring open house takes place at Knollwood on Saturday, May 11.  Between 11 am and 3 pm, we’ll be welcoming guests with tours, free mini lessons, a chance to paint Forest, and of course, refreshments.  Please bring your friends who might be interested in taking lessons at the farm.  

 We’re looking for volunteers to help with the event, so please talk to Nancy or Ann if you’re interested!

The third  version of this event promises to be a great one!  Join the helpers as they compete against fellow helpers from other days of the week to see which day of the week can get the most food and funds for the Waukesha County Food Pantry.

The teams of helpers will compete in fun events while the food and cash donations are totaled.  We’ll finish the day with an awards ceremony where we honor the teams that have collected the most food and funds to help our neighbors in need.

Make sure to save the date!  You won’t want to miss this!

Remember that summer riding school starts June 10, with our special show prep edition taking place June 17-21.  This is a great chance for riders competing in the June show to prepare for the event with extra riding time on their horse for the show.  Campers will learn about horse showing and the preparation of the horses and riders for the big event!
